The Flock - Ancestral Altar Cloth
For the soul who knows healing happens in layers.
✴︎ Product Story
This piece began as a vintage linen square. She was soft, drapey and delicately handwoven along the borders with delicate green and brown threads. It had lived a full life before I ever met her. Sure, she carried a few stains, a tiny cut, but she also had that quiet feeling of being “put away” for too long.
When I asked if she wanted to become something new, she answered immediately. YES!
This one wanted to return to life.
I first tried to make her an ancestral wood-slice altar cloth, but as the circle grew, she wept. Then I wept. Nothing about it was right. It wasn’t her story.
I had other pieces diving head first into a dye bath, and at the last possible moment, I submerged her and the giant circle mistake. The dye bath felt like yet another moment where I worried I’d let her down. But oh the green emerged! And the giant wooden circle? Faded into a faint ghost like yet another previous life just beneath the surface. I guess I was adding layers and memories, not mistakes.
As she began to dry, the musical “Wicked’ was playing in the background. And that’s when “Defying Gravity” took over and she asked for what she wanted.
Doves. A whole flock of them.
Golden-white, glowing against the green.
It was my first time painting with bleach and let me tell you, there are ZERO guarantees and ZERO safety net. You have to put your brush to the cloth and trust.
So I did.
And she became extraordinary.
Revived and grateful.
This is a piece that remembers every hand that has been part of her story.
Her personality is gratitude.
Gratitude for a new life.
Gratitude for the person who chooses her next chapter.
Gratitude for being seen again.
She’s ready to fly to someone who will use her.
She doesn’t want to be stored.
She wants to belong.
✴︎ Symbolism
Doves carry some of the oldest spiritual meanings on earth:
Peace after turmoil (Noah’s dove returning with the olive branch)
Soul guidance (Greek myth links doves to the Oracle at Dodona)
Ancestral presence (many cultures see doves as spirit-messengers)
Rebirth and blessing (from Mesopotamia to the Celts)
Devotion and hope
A flock of doves amplifies the symbolism:
community, continuity, shared memory, and the return of what was once lost.
This cloth embodies all of that.
A flock is a blessing in motion.

✴︎ Care
Please note: this is a vintage linen piece, hand embellished by Emily. The pigments and inks are permanent but may transfer if exposed to high moisture. (Don’t spill your moonwater. It may come out totally fine, but I haven’t submerged it to test.) Just be cautious. Keep your cloth dry and away from water or oils, and avoid prolonged direct sunlight to preserve its vibrancy.
Because each cloth is hand crafted, no two will ever be identical.
