The Mule Deer carries the medicine of the mountain pathfinder because they are an animal who knows how to traverse difficult terrain with sure-footed, silent certainty. Their oversized ears (hence “mule”) are attuned to the wind, the whispers, and the subtle messages often missed by others.
In both Celtic and Indigenous traditions, this deer belongs to the mystic, the traveler, and the teacher. It is an ally for those crossing thresholds, reinventing identity, or seeking clarity from a higher vantage point.
This particular antler was naturally shed, deep in the woods, only to be discovered later by a wanderer. No harm came to the animal for us to receive it. Perhaps it was left as a gift so that we could embrace this particular animal’s magic.
It called to me to work with it during a deeply transformative Scorpio season in 2025. I find no coincidence that Mercury is in Sagittarius, the very sign of the mystic, the traveler and the teacher. Lovingly cleaned, wrapped with soft suede for grounding, adorned with alpaca and silk for energetic sensitivity, and kissed with a luminous antique gold finish. The gold is a hand-applied patina meant to invoke a warm, sun-touched gleam that echoes the light found at the top of a mountain ridge.

This Mule Deer Antler was tended to as a sacred object from the moment it entered my studio. I often wait months before an object indicates it is ready to become. Once this antler was ready, it was cleansed with juniper smoke to wrapped in suede during a waxing moon for growing intuition, and dressed with alpaca and silk yarn for softness and psychic receptivity.
As I applied the antique gold detailing I felt the need to embrace Sun energy and called in clarity, protection, and higher sight. As the sun hits the tops of the peaks it highlights our ability to perceive the path before it becomes fully visible.
Once I finished the piece, I placed it overnight on a bed of pine needles accompanied by smoky quartz. This felt like a nod to the high-altitude guardianship of this deer’s homeland. The next day I sealed it’s energy within the Akashic field for guidance and protection.
Origin & Material
This is a naturally shed Mule Deer antler from the Rocky Mountain region.
The suede is cow. The alpaca and silk yarn was hand dyed by a fellow artist. Gold detailing is applied with a hand-burnished patina.
